Besides the make believe of Hollywood and behind the facade of incredible infrastructures here is the harsh realities of the financial system on which the economy of the country runs. It is easier to get consumed by the credit management than getting a driver's licence.
For the benefit of people back home who assumed -quite wrongly that milk and honey flow on the streets of America; they don't. Most people are permanently on credit card- life -support. Credit cards are small plastic cards with different security features that extends a line of credit – or a temporary loan – any time a consumer uses it to make a purchase.
If the loan or charge is paid back within a specified grace period – usually between 25 and 30 days – then you don’t have to pay anything above and beyond the amount you initially charged; it amounts to a short-term, interest-free loan.
However, if you are unable or unwilling to pay your full balance in that time, you will owe interest on your purchases – money charged in addition to the amount you already owe. That’s one way card issuers earn money in exchange for making these temporary loans.
Credit card interest is generally charged as a percentage of what you owe each month. The percentage of interest you’ll owe each year is your annual percentage rate, commonly referred to as your APR.
Americans and that includes those already marked for deportation by the incoming administration spent $695m on Christmas gifts some days ago, and a large chunk of that will be on the famous credit cards.
In the hand of the financially undisciplined, the card could wreck your credit record and put you where the system wants you-perpetual economic doom.If however you rein your appetite for spontaneous shopping and pay your bills before it is or when due, the benefits of the credit card is just enourmous. Will this work back home? Before I left, no. Now? Ask Mrs Adeosun.
As for the folks who are home on holiday from here and spending to impress in Nigeria should better be reminded that debt is like diabetes; you can only control it by insulin and diet, once you have it. You have it.
The blog is meant to analyze Nigeria news from a diasporic perspective with the aim of proferring practicable solutions. It will also be a pot pouri of ideas where well meaning Nigerians can meet online to exchange opinions, market their potentials, celebrate achievements and advertise their business interests.

HomeAbroad: Heal the sick....
Heal the sick....
Somewhere in the sprawling county of Montgomery is a clinic seated like an oasis in the desert. Devoid of any aesthetic encumberances,it seems purposely designed for its set objectives of providing succor for the sick. Well, that was where I headed when this perennial headache that followed me from Nigeria was serious about relocating with me.
Health system delivery is a bit complicated in the United States and trying to explain it here will most certainly bore you and leave me exhausted. Suffice to say that the law stipilates that you cannot walk in to any pharmacy shop to buy medicines without prescription, though illicit drugs are readilly available in the alleys! That however is another story for another day.
Anyway, the fact that I got there after they have closed - remember it is a community clinic, did not deter them from seeing me. They took their time time in attending to me, even without a health insurance and a proof of employment status! Tests and evaluation that will have 'naturally' took forever back home were done and analyzed in minutes. I left with a smile on my face, a heart full of gratitude and a mind full of burden. Just like you, this level of free medical benevolence got me curious and below is my findings.
Muslim Community Center medical clinic in Montgomery county is the brainchild of Dr Asif Qadri-who incidentally treated me, is an affable but brilliant cardiologist and specialist of internal medicine of India descent who has purposed in his heart to devote his time and talent in healing humanity using his faith as a Moslem for the cause. The clinic shared the same ground with the central mosque in the neighborhood. Assisting him were a competent staff of less than twenty liberal minded professionals who allow their deeds to proclaim their faith.
The clinic is funded by occasional grant from the government and largely by Muslims through the payment of zakat. In the Sharia, the word Zakat refers to the determined share of wealth prescribed by Allah to be distributed among the deserving categories of those entitled to receive it. Muslims who own wealth over a certain amount (called Nisab) are required to donate a portion of this wealth (a minimum of 2.5%) to those in need.
These Muslim faithfuls in conjunction with Dr. Asif Qadri and his team has by His grace offered medical assistance to teeming immigrants irrespective of their faith in the last thirteen years of the clinic humble existence.
Suddenly, the parable of the good Samaritan and the principle behind tithes without offerings to the needy exposed the gospel we all proclaimed with our mouth and not our deeds.

Hilarious Triumph
Before the 2015 gubernatorial elections in Lagos, Jimmy Agbaje was more of a seasoned person and politician than the present Lagos State governor. To clear the air on their capabilities as prospective chief executives, debates were organised for them and on each occasion Ambode was taking to the cleaners by the more erudite Agbaje.
Running on the platform of a 'wrong party' (PDP) was always going to be an excess baggage that Agbaje couldn't pay for by his brilliance alone, but Lagosians were gracious enough to allow him through by looking the other way. The problem however started for Agbaje when the tribal sentiment about Lagos being a no man's land kite was flown. The people, goaded by the king of Lagos reacted and without notice buried Jimmy Agbaje and his intelligence in a landslide loss of the gubernatorial election. The rest however is not history as it resonated here some 24 hours in the presidential election.
Let's face it, Donald Trump' resume will ideally not qualify him for any decent mid level job in an insurance company, talkless of a commander in chief of the greatest army on planet earth. So we thought. For a guy that publicly admitted that he cheated on his tax returns, a fellow that sees and treats women like furniture item and insulted the daylight out of the media,to have come this far can only mean one thing, movement.
This movement started some eight years ago when Obama became the first black man to occupy the oval office. His second term in office sent the realization that America was quickly transiting from a land of dreams and opportunities to a no man's land. They regrouped and the movement was born but they needed an outsider, a non politician and a brash man that is not necessarily gentle to personify and lead the movement. So, without formal interview, along came Donald Trump with all his shortcomings for a job that is perfect fit for him.
Contrary to general but wrong public perceptions, the real America was never hospitable until after the confederate war and it become a conglomerate of diversities of people from different walk of life. It however appeared that the Pharaoh that knew Joseph is dead and the new Ramsey in town has not fully come to terms with the responsibilities of the old office and the new three dimensional movement.
As for the undocumented immigrants, the abused Latinos, the threathened Muslims and the apprehensive Africans, they can take their solace in the enshrined Amercan institutions that cannot be manipulated by any impudent individual,no matter how powerful. In the meantime, the President-elect may want to start delivering on his suicidal campaign promises, while I pack my things!

HomeAbroad: Burden of expectations
Burden of expectations
Like any loyal wife, Melania Trump has come to the defense of her husband some hours to the final debate. Dismissing her husband's vulgarties on the box office video co - starring Billy Bush , as 'boys' talk, and should therefore no longer be a subject of national discourse that has the capability of tilting the election in Hilary's favor.
She has decided to accept her husband's apologies and move on, the incident happened over a decade ago anyway, and she still did not understand why the nation will not forgive and forget her boy husband youthful exuberance at age 52! Two reasons why the nation has decided to make a meal out of this one is because unlike Melania, that has the title of first Lady to gain from her magnanimity, similar expression of that virtue will not profit the nation. Such intransigence at an age that Obama has already rounded up his first term in the office is excusable, but not pardonable, especially from a heart that is not contrite.
This issue is however more moralistic than political at least to the average American and their system. They run a pro-feminine system that posits that an average woman is hampered by a male dominated environment and an egalitarian society would be the last jig saw piece in creation picture. So, the fear is that a 52 year old man who is always in the 'locker room' talking like a 'boy' may grow up to be an old man who does not know the position of his wife in his house talkless of the society.
PMB has permanently been in the news of late for the wrong reasons, but this time, for domestic reasons that should not be of our concern, if it had been kept at home. In one of his too numerous trips abroad, the President admitted to one of the most powerful women in the world during a Berlin conference that, 'I do not know the party my wife belongs to, I know she belongs to my kitchen, living room and the other room'. This sexist remark was made in apparent frustration to his wife earlier admission that she's not going to vote for his reelection if he does not shake up his indolent government. PMB ought to be aware that his popularity and goodwill have plummeted like the Naira and therefore must be at his humble best, at least for now.
This is a matrix of socio-political tendencies; firstly, a house divided against itself cannot stand, both speakers of the GOP and APC are clearly not in tandem with the Presidential nominee and the President respectively. Secondly, there are deeper cracks at home than the potential first lady and substantive first lady are admitting.
William Shakespeare once states: "hell hast no fury like a woman scorned". It may be a bit late for Trump and PMB, but there is a lesson in all these for those who believe that Eve was an afterthought of creation.

HomeAbroad: Tamed transition
Tamed transition
Forty-eight hours after David Cameron left power and 10 Downing Street for Theresa May, the foreign policy of the new government was already felt in Nigeria through changes designed to drive revenue from visa application at their chancery. That is implementation.
Six months into the life of the present administration, we were still shopping for individuals “that we were made to believe” will have been screened and passed all integrity tests. The list eventually came and left everyone wondering what yardstick was used for the tests, in the first place. A year after, we still do not have a blueprint nor a decent budget to work with. For a government that rode into power with so much goodwill, and, did not have a liability of political petitions, they still did not hit the ground running. This is unacceptable.
For every need you can will from your infinite realm of imagination, someone here has made a provision for it. It is just incredible how every little thing that makes life easier is on the shelf in a mall. The focus and drive, I think, is on improving life and impacting the immediate environment without neglecting the ozone depletion. With that kind of mindset, there is no way their nation will not grow. That is commitment.
It is good news that we are discovering oil in commercial quantity in every nook and cranny of our country, but who will be buying it? Oil is the fuel running international terrorism and coating pockets of war around the globe. The developed countries of the world are unanimous in their decision to fund research for alternate and cleaner energy. That is vision.
The new vocabulary in our country now is diversification. If we move our agriculture from the level of subsistence to mechanize and industrial, we would have sufficiently made provision for the future. We must also not align our agro business with politics by creating grazing routes all over the country for the benefit of cattle-rearers, who are infamously the subject of national security. That will be suicidal.
Peddling the fact that the former government mismanaged resources is a recycled knowledge. That oil price has dipped in the international market is a fact available on Google and that our leaders are corrupt and reckless is an incontrovertible culture of ours that this new administration cannot continue to dwell on. We are sick of excuses; let them plan with vision and implement with commitment. That is an order!
